Harshavardhan Kulkarni, the son of Kannada poet G.V. Kulkarni, is the director of the Hindi comedy drama ‘Badhaai Do’ (2022) starring Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Sheeba Chaddha, and Chum Darang.

The film depicts a lavender marriage between police officer Shardul Thakur (Rajkummar Rao) and physical education teacher Sumi Singh (Bhumi Pednekar).

Filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, principal shooting was completed in March 2021, and ‘Badhaai Do’ was finally released theatrically on February 11, 2022.

Commenting on the movie and its subject matter, Kulkarni asked for “tolerance from the audience because it is about the queer community.”

“We went one step beyond and we said, we are going to be allies. We are not going to be just accepting, tolerant, empathetic, and all of that. We are actually going to be allies,” Kulkarni told Indian Express, adding that the idea of allyship was woven into the script of the film.

“For people to understand [queer relationships and the queer community], they need to understand it from the grassroot level. It will probably get a wider reach and I feel that that might convert people into becoming allies in the future,” the director added, striking a hopeful note ahead of the film’s release.
