Akane Yamaguchi beat China’s Chen Yufei 21-12, 10-21, 21-14 to win the world title in the women’s singles at the Badminton World Championships. The two played in Tokyo.

This was her second title in consecutive years. 

Yamaguchi had advanced to the final without dropping a game. After winning one set against Yufei in the final, she dropped one. The Japanese player won the third set 21-14. 

The Tokyo tournament is her second victory after the All England Open in March.

“We’re in Japan and I think my win was down to the power of the crowd,” said the 25-year-old.

“I had some fatigue and I felt really tired until midway through the match. Then the final game started and I just wanted to enjoy it and I started to play well and my movement improved.”
