Answer: Ram Nath Kovind

Ram Nath Kovind is an Indian lawyer and politician who was the country’s president from 2017 to 2022. Draupadi Murmu succeeded him.

He was the second Dalit to hold the office, following Kocheril Raman Narayanan, and the first member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Kovind worked for the Delhi Free Legal Aid Society and was the general secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Koli Samaj, an organisation that promoted the interests of the Koli people, a Dalit subcaste, from 1971 to 1975 and again in 1981.

He was a union government lawyer in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979, and he became an advocate-on-record of India’s Supreme Court in 1978. Kovind rose to the position of union government standing counsel in the Supreme Court in 1980, where he remained till 1993. In addition, he was Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s executive assistant from 1977 to 1978.

Kovind joined the BJP in 1991 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha (India’s upper chamber of parliament) three years later from Uttar Pradesh. He sat on several committees throughout his 12 years in that body, including those on law and justice, social justice and empowerment, and the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

He was a member of the Indian delegation to the United Nations and delivered a speech to the General Assembly in 2002. Kovind was named governor of the state of Bihar in 2015. His nonconfrontational stance to political issues garnered him plaudits from all sides of the political aisle. Among his significant achievements as governor was the establishment of a judicial panel to examine university corruption.

The BJP announced Kovind as its choice to succeed Pranab Mukherjee in the ceremonial post of president in June 2017. He was up against Meira Kumar, the former speaker of the Lok Sabha (the lower house) and a Dalit herself. Despite his low-key profile, which made him relatively unknown, he received over two-thirds of the vote. In July 2017, Kovind was sworn in as India’s 14th president.
