Erik Lamela, a former winger for Tottenham Hotspur who is currently playing for Sevilla in La Liga, scored an incredible Rabona goal for Spurs in a Premier League game against their bitter rivals Arsenal.
The goal captured everyone’s attention and was selected the Premier League Goal of the Season even though the Gunners went on to win the game 2-1 and Lamela was given a red card. Along with 10 other goals achieved throughout the course of the season by different players across top divisions, Lamela’s Rabona goal was also considered for the 2021 Puskas Award.
Lamela eventually took home the prize and was announced the victor at the 2021 FIFA Best Awards.
The Puskas Award is given to the best goal scored across all competitions in a single season, and is named after Hungarian legend, Ferenc Puskas.
Lamela said at the ceremony, “Thank you so much, I’m very happy to win this award. Honestly, nothing [was going through his mind], in that moment I didn’t think too much. I didn’t realise how special the goal was.”
The Argentine further added, “I just kicked the ball and started running around the pitch with my teammates!”
