Zoe Saldana is set to return in the character of Neytiri for the upcoming film, Avatar: The Way of Water. The film will be directed by James Cameron, who was also the director behind the original 2009 film.
Cameron is well-known for his making successful movies on a massive scale, having earlier helmed projects like The Terminator, The Terminator 2, and Titanic.
Regarding her return, Saldana told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s exciting; nerve-wracking”, further adding, “Humbling as well, you know — the wait is finally over. And we get to share something that we love so much with so many people that we know love it, too.”
Regarding the film’s theatrical release, Cameron said at CinemaCon that the project will “push the limits of the big screen” by using “3D, with high dynamic range, with high frame rate, higher resolution, and a much greater reality in our visual effects.”
While speaking about her turns as the aliens Neytiri in the Avatar franchise and Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy, Saldana said, “They demand a different kind of sacrifice, but they stand very unique on their own subjective grounds”.
This is how the actor detailed her preparation for Neytiri: “…when it comes to Neytiri, it’s more of a practice. It’s months of training, not just rehearsing with your director, but training with movement coaches, and traveling to the jungle and getting to feel what it’s like to make your own food with all the elements that are around you. And once you use all of that, you do bring it into what we call the volume, which is the set, when you shoot under performance-capture.”
