It was the most money ever raised at a single art auction, according to the New York auction house Christie’s. According to Allen’s intentions, who passed away in 2018, the money will be given to charitable causes. Allen chose every piece individually rather than leaving it up to an art buyer, as some other billionaires do, and the pieces span more than 500 years.

Georges Seurat’s Les Poseuses, Ensemble (Petite version), an 1888 oil on canvas painting of three naked ladies, was one of the most expensive pieces ever auctioned. It sold for a record-breaking $149.2 million, the highest ever for a Seurat piece. La Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a vibrant landscape by Cézanne created between 1888 and 1890, set a new record when it sold for $137.8 million. And Birch Forest, a Gustav Klimt painting from 1903, reached the record price for a Klimt piece when it sold for $104.6 million.
