One of the most popular and efficient search engines turns 23 on Monday. To celebrate its 23 birthday, Google has come up with a doodle that features a cake with ‘23’ written on top of it. A birthday candle lights up the page substituting for ’L’ in ‘Google’ and of course, there’s chocolate frosting and sprinkles.

You can check out today’s doodle, which is an animated feature, here.

It did not take long for social media users to join the party.

One of the users tweeted, “The Google doodle today just made me realise I am old,” while another wrote,”And today @Google is the only God I believe & worship.”  A user extended their wishes, tweeting, “It’s Google’s 23rd birthday wow, I may not have acknowledged but Google has been immensely helpful to me in my learning journey and it still is..”

The company was technically founded on September 4, 1988, and although it celebrated its birthday on the said date for the first seven years, it decided to shift the celebrations to September 27 to coincide with the announcement of the record number of pages that the search engine was indexing.

The first Google doodle on the long-running ‘Running Man’ event in Black Rock City, Nevada, dates back to 1998, to a month before the company was founded. The official Google Doodle page mentions how Google was founded and traces its founders’ roots back to Stanford University.  On its doodle page, Google gave details about the term ‘googol’ from which it is derived and said, “The now world-famous moniker is a play on a mathematical term that arose out of an unassuming stroll around the year 1920. While walking in the woods of New Jersey, American mathematician Edward Kasner asked his young nephew Milton Sirotta to help him choose a name for a mind-boggling number: a 1 followed by 100 zeros. Milton’s reply? A googol! The term gained widespread visibility twenty years later with its inclusion in a 1940 book Kasner co-authored called “Mathematics and the Imagination.”
