One of the last bastions in the besieged southern port city of Mariupol, the Azovstal steel plant, is making its last stand under “continuous” Russian attacks.

Providing an update on Mariupol on Sunday, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter, “Orthodox Easter 2022. But right now, RF [the Russian Federation] is continuously attacking the Mariupol Azovstal [steel plant].”

“The place where our civilians and military are located is shelled with heavy air bombs and artillery. RF accumulates forces and equipment for the assault,” Podolyak added.

The Ukrainian presidential advisor’s comments come days after Russian President Vladimir Putin proclaimed that the ‘liberation’ of Mariupol was complete.

Ukraine, however, says that a few hundred Russian troops and civilians are holed up in the Azovstal steel plant, which is dangerously running low on supplies.

According to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, the industrial complex, which has been surrounded by Russian forces for days, is shelter as many as 1,000 civilians and 500 wounded Ukrainian servicemen.

With Russia seemingly unwilling to relent in its attack on Azovstal, Podolyak urged Moscow to “think about the remnants of its reputation.”

The presidential advisor went on to urge Russia to open a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of the trapped civilians, calling for a “special round of negotiations” for the exchange of prisoners of war.

Reports of the Russian attacks on Mariupol on Orthodox Easter come hours after an alleged Russian strike killed at least eight, including a 3-month-old baby in Odessa.

The update on Mariupol also comes after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the Russian attack in Odessa and decried Moscow’s decision to turn down an Ukrainian offer for a temporary ceasefire on Sunday to mark Easter.
