A struggling Barcelona side has more concerns after a COVID-19 outbreak at Camp Nou. The Spanish club has confirmed that key players Samuel Umtiti, Ousmane Dembele, and Gavi have tested positive.

Currently, the affected players are self-isolating, and seem to be in good health, all things considered. The club has done its bit of informing the necessary authorities. They join Jordi Alba, Dani Alves, and Clement Lenglent. Notably, Alves tested positive this week and now with Umtiti out of action, the Barcelona defence line seems to have sustained a noticeable dent.

Barcelona’s official statement reads, “The footballers O. Dembele, Umtiti and Gavi are positive for Covid-19 after PCR tests on the squad. The players are in good health and self-isolating at home. The Club has reported the cases to the relevant authorities”.

The COVID wracked squad is also facing its share of injuries, with Sergio Roberto out of action due to surgery for a thigh problem. Memphis Depay is dealing with a hamstring injury, and Sergino Dest, the full-back, has an adductor issue. Meanwhile, Sergio Busquets, the glue that often holds the team together, is looking at a suspension.

The former legendary midfielder, and current head coach Xavi, is faced with a tough choice while drawing up the Barcelona team for their next fixture. As the La Liga games resume this week, Barcelona has to make do without 10 players. They are seventh on the table and face Real Mallorca on Sunday, January 2.

As Barcelona is facing one of its worst seasons, also bowing out of the Champions League, Xavi is convinced the team has a psychological problem rather than a sporting one. He addressed the issue, saying, “At Barcelona, it’s not worth playing 6/10 or 7/10. You have to aim for excellence. This is what is missing. Courage, aiming high and not low because that is not what Barcelona does. Being brave and understanding the game, we are not that far from what we want”.
