Bayern Munich were confirmed as Bundesliga champions for the ninth consecutive year and the 30th time overall, both record-extending milestones, after second-placed RB Leipzig’s 3-2 loss away to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Leipzig were seven points off the reigning champions before kickoff, which became an unassailable lead following the loss with just two games left to play. Marco Reus opened the scoring on seven minutes, with Jadon Sancho doubling the lead six minutes after the half-time break.

Leipzig pulled level through Lukas Klostermann (63′) and Dani Olmo (77′) but Sancho secured the points with the winner three minutes from normal time.

The two sides will take on each other again in the DFB Pokal final on May 14.

The title comes as the perfect farewell for outgoing manager Hansi Flick, who has now won seven titles in his stint with the Bavarian giants, as many as the number of games he has lost.

Having taken over from Nico Kovac in November 2019, Flick led Bayern to their second ‘treble’ of trophies, winning the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and the Champions League in the coronavirus-disrupted 2019-20 season.

He then won the DFL-Supercup, UEFA Supercup and the Club World Cup this season. His second Bundesliga crown makes it seven trophies in 83 games in charge, averaging a little more than a trophy every 12 games. Of those 83 games, Flick has 68 wins, eight draws and seven losses.

The 56-year-old will step down from his position at the end of the season, with highly-rated Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann already confirmed to take over.

Meanwhile, Thomas Muller and David Alaba clinched their 10th career Bundesliga title, a new record in the competition’s history.

Bayern will lift the Bundesliga shield following their encounter against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.
