An explosion ripped through Lebanon’s
capital city Beirut on Tuesday, killing over 100 and injuring thousands. Soon
after the blasts, a lot of videos and footage have emerged.
In once such video, a BBC journalist
in Beirut, who is in the middle of a virtual interview, can be seen knocking to
the floor after the explosions.
Maryam Toumi, BBC News journalist
in Beirut, was conducting a video interview with project manager at the
Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy when the blast hit. In the video, Maryam
can be seen stopping mid-sentence after which the walls begin to shake as she
tries to get up off the chair and make sense of what is happening.
Seconds later, a much bigger
explosion happens, which knocks the device that she was filming on to the
ground, after which we see glass falling. Maryam can be heard screaming, as her
interviewees look on, horrified.
The massive explosions have destroyed the city’s port and buildings across the
capital and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky. Over 3 lakh people
have been displaced and many are still missing.
Officials claim that the mega-blast was caused due to the ignition of a huge depot of ammonium nitrate at Beirut’s port. The President has imposed two weeks of emergency in the city and an investigation into the incident has started.
