Afghanistan’s local media has reported that at least nine people died and 13 others were wounded in two explosions on the evening of Thursday in Balkh, a province in Afghanistan.

Citing local authorities, media reports said that the blasts happened in the region of Mazar-e-Sharif in the province. As per a report by Tolo News, both the explosions were planned to target people using public transportation.

“The targets appear to be Shiite passengers,” Asif Waziri, Balkh’s provincial police spokesman told AFP.

Waziri said that he believes that the attack is a tactic used by enemies of the country to divide people and cause unrest.

“The enemies of Afghanistan are creating tension and division among our people,” he said.

While no terror group has taken responsibility for the attacks, local health officials have confirmed that several corpses have been brought to hospitals that are treating the wounded.

“Blood and fear are everywhere,” said Ahmad Zia Zindani, a spokesman for the province’s public health department.

“People were screaming,” Zindani said, adding that they were doing so while seeking updates on their family members at the local hospital.

“Many residents were also coming to donate blood,” he added.

According to Al Jazeera, ISIL took responsibility for the attack.

“The soldiers of the caliphate managed to get a booby-trapped bag” inside the religious place and detonated it strategically from a distance after the mosque became crowded with worshippers, the group said in a statement.
