Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced his immediate resignation as a member of parliament, consequently triggering a by-election in his closely contested constituency.

Johnson in the statement, “It is very sad to be leaving parliament – at least for now. I am being forced out by a tiny handful of people, with no evidence to back up their assertions, and without approval even of Conservative party members let alone the wider electorate.”

Uxbridge and South Ruislip is a constituency in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom Parliament. Since its inception in 2010, it has been held by the Conservative Party. Boris Johnson, who represented the district from 2015 to 2023, just stepped down, leaving the seat vacant. From 2019 to 2022, Johnson served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Following the announcement that the incumbent MP, Conservative Boris Johnson, will step down from Parliament with immediate effect, a by-election for the United Kingdom parliamentary district of Uxbridge and South Ruislip is scheduled for 2023. Johnson, who was Prime Minister from 2019 to 2022, announced his resignation on June 9, 2023, after a Commons probe found that he had deceived Parliament about the Partygate incident.

The by-election process will act to the regular protocols established by the United Kingdom’s electoral rules and regulations.

Typically, political parties will propose candidates to represent their respective parties in a by-election. Independent candidates may run as well. Registered voters in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency will be able to vote on the scheduled election day. The candidate with the most votes will be elected as the new MP for the constituency. Majorly, the constituency is dominated by two parties – Conservative and Labour.

In the 2019 elections, Boris Johnson claimed victory with 25,351 votes, followed by Labour Party candidate Ali Milani by 18,141 votes.
