Restaurant giant Burger King’s attempt to highlight gender disparity in the restaurant industry with a tweet on International Women’s day does not appear to have the intended effect.

The Twitter account for Burger King UK on Monday put out a tweet that said, “Women belong in the kitchen.”

Reading the subsequent tweets makes it clear that the fast food giant was actually pointing out the lack of female chefs in the restaurant business.

“If they want to, of course. Yet only 20% of chefs are women. We are on a mission to change the gender ratio in the restaurant industry by empowering female employees with the opportunity to pursue a culinary career,” read the next tweet.

The company highlighted its new scholarship program for female employees to “pursue their culinary dreams!”

But the initial tweet bas enough to star a twitter firestorm.

When Burger King UK put out the tweet, they would not have seen this coming.
