A China Eastern Boeing 737-800 with 132 people on board crashed in the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Monday afternoon, setting off a mountain fire.

The 132 people on board the flight included 123 passengers and nine crew members, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said on its website. There were no foreigners among, authorities confirmed.

Following the crash, videos and pictures purporting to come from the scene started doing the rounds on social media showing smoke billowing from a hillside and wreckage on the ground.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said that he was “shocked” to learn about the accident and has ordered an “all-out search” and rescue efforts. The number of casualties was not clear as of Monday night.

Boeing began delivering the 737-800 to customers in 1997 and delivered the last of the series to China Eastern in 2020. Boeing 737 is one of the world’s most popular planes for short and medium-haul flights. China Eastern operates multiple versions of the common aircraft, including the 737-800 and the 737 Max.

The 737 Max version was grounded worldwide after two fatal crashes within a span of five months in 2018 and 2019. China’s aviation regulator cleared that plane to return to service late last year, making the country the last major market to do so.
