A 23-year-old Chinese influencer plunged 160-feet to her death from a crane while recording a video of herself. The phone was still in her hand when she crashed to the ground. 

Xiao Qiumei, was a crane operator who regularly shared videos on TikTok. In her final video, the influencer can be seen speaking to a camera from a crane cabin before falling to her death. Most of her co-workers had left the site when the incident took place in the prefecture-level city of Quzhou, in western China’s Zhejiang Province on Tuesday. 

Her family has reportedly confirmed that she plunged to death after missing a step. Qiumei’s funeral and cremation have already taken place.

Local media reports stated that Qiumei was a mother of two children and was well known on sites including the Chinese version of TikTok, known as Douyin. Her videos showed her followers what it was like to have a job operating a crane. She had over 100,000 followers on the app. 

Following her death, several people to took to social media to offer condolences. 

“Xiao Qiumei, an influencer from China, reportedly died after falling from a 160-foot tower crane while recording herself for a social media video in the city of Quzhou, China. The 23-year-old was speaking into a camera in what appears to be a crane cabin when she fell. Duh,” one Twitter user wrote. 

“I have no words for this,” wrote another user.

Qiumei’s death comes less than a month after a Hong Kong Instagram star named Sofia Cheung plummeted to her death after she slipped while snapping a selfie at a waterfall.

The 32-year-old and three friends were on a trip to Ha Pak Lai park when Cheung decided to take selfies at the edge of a waterfall. She reportedly lost her footing and fell into the 16-foot pool below. Emergency services arrived at the scene and rushed the woman to a local hospital where she was pronounce dead on arrival.
