Former officer of Minnesota law enforcement Derek Chauvin offered his “condolences” to the family of George Floyd, an African American man who was killed by Chauvin last year in May. Chauvin made the statements in one of the last court sessions of his sentencing on Friday.

He said that due to additional legal matters which were currently underway a full formal statement at the time is not being delivered. However, he added, “I do want to give my condolences to the Floyd family”, reported AFP.

While addressing the family of George Floyd, he said, “There’s going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest and I hope things will give you some peace of mind.”

Before Chauvin addressed the court, his mother pleaded for leniency from Judge Peter Cahill and said that Chauvin was a “good man”.

She added, “I have always believed in your innocence and I will never waver from that” while addressing her 45-year-old son.

Soon after the closing statements ended from both sides, the court went into a 15-minute recess. The time was likely used to decide the highly awaited sentencing of Chauvin. The former police officer will spend more than 22 years in prison for the killing of George Floyd.
