A picture of an aspiring make-up artist’s corpse in Bucha reflects the atrocities of Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine. Iryna Filkina, 52, was recognised by her distinctive manicure. She was killed by Russian forces while riding her bike back home.

Anastasia Subacheva, a local make-up artist, was the one who was able to identify Filkina. Subacheva told The New York Times that she recognised the red and white nail paint right away after seeing the photograph.

“When I saw it, I felt physically like my heart started to break,” she was reported as saying.

Subacheva, who has been working in and around Bucha for five years, claimed Filkina contacted her in February looking for lessons.

Iryna Filkina met Subacheva for make-up classes at the start of the year. Her ambitions, however, were dramatically thwarted when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

Filkina had resolved to stay in Poland and serve others after sending her girls there. She served individuals seeking refuge in a Bucha shopping centre and cooked for the Ukrainian soldiers.

She attempted to leave the city in a car in early March but was unable to get a seat. So she decided to ride her bike back to her hometown. Olga Shchyruk, one of her daughters, claimed she urged her mother not to ride her bike home and instead take the train. It had been their final discussion.

Olga Shchyruk claimed she found out about her mother’s death on March 6, a day after the occurrence, but she held out hope for a month. Those aspirations were destroyed by the image.

CNN’s chilling footage from this week appears to have recorded the moment Filkina died. A person is seen pedalling a black bicycle down Yablunska Street in Bucha before being killed by the Russian military in drone footage recorded before March 10. A Russian military vehicle emits at least four puffs of smoke after the bike turns a street corner.
