Cristiano Ronaldo’s move of replacing Coca-Cola bottles with mineral water at the press conference on Tuesday ahead of the Euro 2020 match between Portugal and Hungary left a big story. The result – a controversy and a $4bn fall in the share price of the drinks giant.

Soon after taking a seat in front of the reporters at the press conference, Ronaldo saw two bottles of Coca-Cola and an empty bottle of mineral water in front of him. Next, the 36-year-old Portuguese legend removed two bottles of Coca-Cola from the table and lifted the empty bottle of mineral water and said “agua … Nao Coca Cola (Drink mineral water, not Coca Cola).”

When the stock market opened at 3 pm in Europe, Coca-Cola’s share price dropped from $56.10 to $55.22, a 1.6% dip. The market value of Coca-Cola, which is one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020, went from $242bn to $238bn – a drop of $4bn.

The soft drink giant Coca-Cola was quick to respond to the controversy with a statement that said “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” with different “tastes and needs”.

A Euros spokesperson also commented on the entire controversy. “Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences,” he said.

Ronaldo with nearly 300 million Instagram followers sure is pop culture colossus. His gesture, however, was aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and it comes as no surprise that the uber-fit 36-year-old lives by a strict diet and exercise plan.

Ronaldo has said in some interviews that it is important for children to have a healthy diet, away from sugars and fats. “I’m tough on my son. Sometimes he drinks Coke and Fanta and he eats chips and he knows I don’t like it,” he had said.

Cristiano Ronaldo became the all-time highest goalscorer in Euros when he scored two goals against Hungary in Budapest on Tuesday.

He is three goals away from breaking Iran’s Ali Daei’s record of scoring international goals.
