Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday walked off his live television interview midway complaining about his health. The 69-year-old later came back only to apologise.
Erdogan had a stomach bug, initial reports said. However, later several social media users speculated that the Turkish leader had a heart attack.
The President’s Directorate of Communications however has denied the heart attack reports.
“Reports on social media that President Erdogan allegedly suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized are not true,” the center tweeted.
Turkey is going to Presidential elections on May 14. Erdogan cancelled all his public appearances on Wednesday and Vice President Fuat Oktay stepped in for him. Their party informed that the Turkish leader will not be holding any meetings on Thursday too.
Meanwhile several social media users speculated that Erdogan had a heart attack. Chinese media organisations ran with the report.
“There are conflicting news from Türkiye; After Erdoğan’s campaign speech was half-baked, some said he had a stomach problem, but other sources in Turkey claimed he went to the hospital due to a heart attack. Meanwhile, a few minutes ago there were news from Turkey again that,” a Twitter user said.
“Erdogan has reportedly been rushed to hospital and he’s cancelled his upcoming speeches and interviews. It must be a serious medical problem. Some speculate it’s a poisoning or a heart attack. Nothing is verified as of now,” another one added.
However, there is no confirmation.
Oktay on Wednesday said the country’s President is in a “very good” condition.
“The condition of our president is very good. We are in regular contact. He has a slight cold,” the vice president said.
Erdogan cancelled his trip to Mersin on April 27. He was also going to attend a fuel delivery ceremony at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. He, however, might participate via video, Russian news agency TASS reported.
