The history of the world-famous perfumer:

Francisco Rabaneda-Cuervo was born in 1934 in Basque, Spain. His mother worked as a seamstress for Cristobal Balenciaga there and his father served as a general in the armed forces. The Spanish Civil War upended Rabanne’s life when, in 1936, the dictator Francisco Franco’s soldiers turned on his father and shot him to death.

Rabanne studied architecture at the Beaux-Arts institution in Paris and received his diploma after his family fled to France in 1939. Christian Dior, Yves Saint-Laurent, and Pierre Cardin were drawn to the accessories he made at the beginning of his fashion career, including jewelry, ties, and buttons and that’s how he made connections in the industry.

Following the public demand around his own line, Rabanne agreed to a contract in 1968 that placed him under the control of the Puig family, major players in the fashion and fragrance industries with headquarters in Barcelona.

This signaled his debut into the world of fragrances and scents, which overshadowed his reputation as a fashion designer and made his name synonymous with cologne.
