A video showing afrobeat singer Seun Kuti assaulting a police officer in uniform has gone viral on social media. According to Muyiwa Adejobi, a police spokesperson, the incident took place in Lagos.

The 12-second video clip that went viral on Saturday showed Kuti, dressed in a red shirt and white trousers, pushing a police officer who was standing next to a Toyota Hilux police van. Then, as he slapped the officer, he yelled, “You dey crase, you dey mad?” However, in the short clip, the officer didn’t retaliate.

The video saw much public response, with larger population on social media criticising Kuti’s actions and calling for the police to take action against him. “You have no right to slap a police officer though. I will love to see how the police handle the case of Seun Kuti and slapping a uniform man,” A Twitter user said.

In his statement, Adejobi said, “The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba has ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.” Baba has further ordered the arrest of the singer, who is the youngest son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

“IGP Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.” Issuing his defense on social media, Kuti stated that he was the victim in the whole incident.

“He (the police officer) tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof, but I no dey chase clout. He has apologized, and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job (You all should mind your business so the officer will not lose his job),” he mentioned.
