Seven people, including the doctors of Argentinian football
legend Diego Maradona who died last year, are due to face charges of premeditated
murder. The former footballer’s neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina
Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Diaz will be facing prison sentences ranging
from eight to 25 years if found guilty, AFP reported.

The recent developments are based on findings gathered by a
group of experts investigating the death of Maradona in November, 2020 from a heart
attack, the report further noted, referring to a source from the Attorney
General’s office in San Isidro, a city in the greater Buenos Aires area.

The report concluded that Maradona received inadequate medical
attention, having been left suffering for a “prolonged, agonizing
period”, as quoted by AFP.

The accused are barred from leaving the country and will mandatorily
need to appear before an enquiry scheduled to take place between May 31 and
June 14.

The legal findings into the matter were accelerated after a
complaint filed by the two daughters of Maradona accused Luque for the deteriorating
health of the former captain of the Argentina national side.

Prosecutors, reportedly, are of the opinion that the football
star’s death was not due to malpractice or negligence by the doctors, but that
the latter were aware of what was happening and did not do anything to prevent
it.
