Former President Donald Trump’s influence has been at the center of the upcoming primary elections. In Nebraska, Trump’s influence will once again be put to the test after a sweeping success in Ohio and Indiana polls.

The midterm primary elections, scheduled for May 10, 2022, will be seen for two major positions — the first congressional district and the governor’s office.

Jeff Fortenberry vacated the House of Representative’s office after being convicted in March on charges he lied to federal authorities about an illegal campaign contribution he received from a Nigerian billionaire.

Former US President Donald Trump has endorsed Charles Herbster for the governor’s office. Herbster, 67, is a wealthy agribusinessman and cattle breeder who has presented himself as a political outsider and rookie.

The controversial Republican nomination

Trump’s choice for governor’s office has been widely criticsied. Herbster has been linked to various allegations of sexual misconduct, including groping a former Congressional staffer and a state Senator from Nebraska.

While Herbster is currently engaged in a legal battle that involves multiple lawsuits and counter-lawsuits, the former President has stood his ground and vouched for him. The two were also seen together at an electoral rally last week.

Brett Lindstrom, a Republican state Senator and a resident of Omaha, is considered to be one of the biggest challenges to Trump-backed Herbster. Lindstrom has received the backing of Omaha’s mayor and is also expected to score big in the upcoming elections.

What to expect once the polls are concluded?

The main fight for a midterm nomination from Nebraska only exists within the Republican party. The nomination from the Democratic party is being contested by state Senator Carol Blood and a little-known candidate who has not actively campaigned.
