Ever since its premiere back on Netflix in 2016, The Crown has always proved to be a talk of the town and a hotly debatable topic regarding the portrayal of the Royals. One of the much talked about thing in The Crown is the portrayal of Princess Diana which was played by Emma Corrin. In an interview with Tamron Hall on ABC’s Tamron Hall Show, Emma addressed rumours surrounding the Royal family being upset with the characterization of Princess Diana and Prince Charles in the historical drama.

The 24-year-old actress was a guest on Tamron Hall on November 16, 2020 to discuss her role as Princess Diana (after the release of fourth season). During the appearance, the host asked Corrin about recent reports that the royal family and members of British Parliament are displeased with the series’ depiction of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles that ended in a highly publicised divorce.

“It’s a difficult one,” said Corrin about the situation and portrayal of Princess Diana. “I think for everyone in The Crown, we always try and remind everyone that the series that we’re in is fictionalized, to a great extent. Obviously, it has its roots in reality and in some fact, but Peter Morgan’s scripts are works of fiction,” she added.

“At the same time, I understand why people would be upset because this is history,” she continued. Considering the fact that The Crown is to a great extent fictional %u2013 as told by Corrin %u2013 people might get upset as it is an important piece of history.

Corrin further added, “And even with Diana, it’s still very much fresh, I suppose%u2014everything that happened. So I do really understand if people would be upset. We approach these people that we play as characters, which is why it’s such a joyous job because Peter writes such rich and complex characters. And as an actor, it’s such a joy to really bring a lot to them.”

Previously Corrin told E! News that she initially afraid to portray Prince William and Prince Harry’s late mother. However, she was ultimately able to convince herself that she’s playing a character. “This is The Crown’s version of Diana. That really changed it for me. It doesn’t remove the pressure and the responsibility that I feel, but it made it more manageable to do the role,” said Corrin.
