Saturday Night Live (SNL) won the Emmy for ‘outstanding variety sketch series’ 2021.  The variety sketch comedy show on NBC has been a regular at the Emmy Awards, America’s top award show for television shows. “A Black Lady Sketch Show” telecast on HBO was among the nominees. The 46th season of SNL ended on May 22, 2021 and the 47th season is scheduled for release in early October.  

SNL, one of the longest-running variety sketch shows on NBC, is broadcast from the famous Studio 8H at the NBC headquarters. Till May 2021, SNL has aired 909 episodes. Sunday’s Emmy adds to SNL’s kitty of 85 Prime Time Emmy Awards, four Writers Guild of America Awards, and two Peabody Awards.

SNL is currently run by Lorne Michaels, executive producer and Steve Higgins. The show is produced by Ken Aymong. Lindsay Shookus is the supervising producer. The other producers of the show include Erid Doyle, Tom Broecker and Carnoline Maroney.

In 2020, Saturday Night Live was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. SNL has been inducted into the TV Guide’s “50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time”. It was also listed as on of Time’s “100 Best TV shows of All-TIME” in 2007. The show is conducted live and in front of a studio audience. Over the years, SNL has seen a fair number of controversies, acts of censorship, with mistakes and intentional acts of sabotage by performance as well as guests.

Only days ago, one of SNL’s biggest stars — Norm Macdonald — passed away after a nine-year-long battle with cancer at the age of 61. Macdonald was an SNL cast member from 1993 to 1998, making his greatest impact as the anchor of SNL’s “Weekend Update” segments for three and a half years.
