An endangered orangutan wandered into a remote Indonesian
village in Lusan in search of food. Lusan village head, Muhammad Irham, said his
wife first noticed the animal going from tree to tree. “She was afraid and
closed all the doors and windows before running to alert other villagers,” he
said. Ihram said all the other villagers soon came out to see the animal which was
looking for food.

The villagers then realized the animal was harmless and some
even assisted it into the village and gave him food.

There were mixed reactions from people’s end, some laughed
with delight while others showed visible fear. In the video clip, the orangutan
is seen taking a comfortable nap against a tree after being fed jackfruit,
bananas, and milk by the villagers.

The animal stayed in the village for
another meal the next day, before heading back into the forest for a while. The

Jamartin Sihite, the CEO of the Borneo Orangutan Survival
Foundation, told VICE multiple factors could explain why the orangutan
“strayed too close to humans without fear,” including reduced
availability of food, the impact of climate change, and forest fires.

The video of the same has gone viral on social media and has
provoked sympathy from people online who called for better control of
deforestation.
