Injury-plagued Liverpool produced a dominant display against Leicester City on Sunday to beat them 3-0 and move level on points with the English Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino starred for Liverpool netting in a goal apiece, while Leicester defender Jonny Evans rewarded Liverpool’s early attacking adventures with an unfortunate own goal.

Let’s take a look at the main talking points from Sunday’s super clash.

1. Even with injuries, the Reds are a force to reckon with

Jurgen Klopp was missing seven first-team regulars due to injury and star player Mohamed Salah for testing positive for coronavirus, but Liverpool still swept aside the Leicester team who had started the weekend on top of the table.

Liverpool, who have already lost their first-choice centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries, suffered yet another setback when midfielder Naby Keita had to be subbed out owing to a muscle injury. However, their makeshift players just seemed to seal the deal.

2. Fabinho can become the centre-back Liverpool need

Defensive midfielder Fabinho donned the role of a makeshift centre-back on Sunday against the Foxes. While this wasn’t the first time he dropped into the backline, the Brazilian might have to take up the role more often this season.

Even against the fast-paced counter-attack of Leicester, Fabinho seemed like a natural fit, tracking back and keeping Jamie Vardy quite silent throughout the game.

3. Firmino back to scoring ways

While Firmino has always been lauded for his off-the-ball play, he has been lacking in the goalscoring department off late.

The Brazilian forward thought he had been denied just his third league goal in 24 games when his shot came back off the post and the follow-up was cleared by Marc Albrighton with just millimetres of the ball, not over the line.

But Firmino rounded off a brilliant team performance by rising highest to meet a James Milner corner.

4. The Diogo Jota effect

It seems like Jota just can’t stop scoring. The Portuguese international became the first Liverpool player to score in his first four home league games when he headed home Andy Robertson’s inch-perfect cross in the 41st minute.

In 12 appearances for the Reds, Jota has already managed to record eights goals. His positive intent throughout the match didn’t let the Merseyside faithful feel Salah’s absence.

5. Liverpool’s getting the better of Brendon Rodgers?

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has now lost all three meetings against his former club and just like the previous meeting between the sides, which Liverpool won 4-0 in December, the Foxes were shown the gulf they have to bridge to become title contenders.
