Brazil winger Raphinha slotted home a stoppage-time penalty to lead Leeds United to a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Tuesday. With the victory, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have moved five points clear of the relegation zone on the points table.

While the game at Elland Road remained mostly lacklustre, the referee’s decision to award a spot-kick to Leeds following consultation with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) lead to a dramatic ending. On the pitchside monitor, the referee spotted Palace defender Marc Guehi blocking a goal-bound header from Liam Cooper with a raised arm at a corner.

Raphinha took his penalty kick with ease, stepping up to the ball and sending it to the left of goalkeeper Vicente Guaita after a stuttered runup.

Leeds, on the way to their third win of the season, throughout the game caused little concern for Palace. However, Leed’s goal drought still persisted as star scorer Patrick Bamford remained out injured. The West Yorkshire club now have 13 goals this season in 14 games, with just five clubs having scored fewer.

Meanwhile, for Patrick Viera’s Palace, this was their second straight loss after being beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa on Saturday.

Substitute Christian Benteke squandered Palace’s best chance, headed wide from three yards (metres) out at the back post from Wilfried Zaha’s cross.

Meanwhile, in the other Tuesday night fixture, after going down to 10 men within the first quarter of the game, Newcastle United failed to capitalise on their first-half lead and Norwich striker Teemu Pukki equalised in the 79th minute in a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle remain the only team in the league yet to register a victory. Their winless start to the season have extended to 14 games, with Eddie Howe’s team on only seven points — three fewer than Norwich.
