Antonio
Conte
’s debut as Tottenham Hotspur coach was chaotic, to say the least. As many
as three players saw red as a 10-man Tottenham beat nine-man Vitesse 3-2 in the
Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Tottenham
were off to a flying start as goals from Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura plus an
own-goal from Jacob Rasmussen handed the hosts a 3-0 lead in the first
half-hour. But just when everyone thought that it will be an easy first victory
for Conte, the visitors pulled back.

Rasmussen
made up for his error with a strike at Spurs goal in the 32nd
minute, just four minutes after he scored an own goal. Mateúš Bero pulled another
back for Vitesse before the clock struck 40 and at halftime, the visitors were
just a goal behind.

The second
half saw three players sent off the pitch, starting with Spurs centre-back
Christian Romero. Vitesse put all the pressure in the world to take advantage
of the extra man but things were squared again after Danilho Doekhi was also
shown a second yellow. So now both teams were down to 10 men.

Vitesse goalkeeper
Markus Schubert was also sent off four minutes after Doekhi, seeing his team’s
hopes of a comeback crushed as they finished the game with nine men.

“It was a crazy game and usually I don’t like these types of games. For sure we were winning 3-0 and then we conceded two goals that we can avoid and then after a red card we were in trouble. But I think to win is good for this team, it’s good for these players and they need to improve their confidence,” Conte said after the game.

Tottenham is second in Group G, three points behind Rennes, which beat Mura 1-0 while Vitesse are third.
