Sanna Marin, the 36-year-old Finnish Prime Minister whose leaked partying video caused a political firestorm, took a drug test on Friday, Finnish public broadcaster YLE reported. Marin took the blood test after accusations that there was mention of drugs at the party she was seen “dancing exuberantly”.

“In recent days, there have been quite serious accusations in the public domain that I have used narcotics. I consider these accusations to be very serious and weighty. For my own legal protection – although I consider the demand for a drug test unreasonable – in order to erase such doubts, I have today taken a drug test,” Marin told reporters, according to YLE.

Videos of Sanna Marin dancing “boisterously” went viral on social media a couple of days ago. Many within the Finnish political scene found her dancing and partying unbecoming of a prime minister

The call for a drug test came first from Mikko Karna, a member of the Centre Party, a coalition partner of Marin’s Social Democratic Party (SDP). Karna wrote on Twitter that the prime minister should undergo a drug test and release its results to the public.

On Thursday, Marin, speaking to reporters from the Kuopio airport, said she did not understand why there were calls for her to take a drug test. “I have nothing to hide, I have never taken drugs,” Marin had said, adding that she had seen no evidence of anything being used anywhere at the party.

“Personally, I did not take drugs, nor did I consume anything other than alcohol,” Marin said.

Sanna Marin, who took over as the Prime Minister of Finland in 2019 at the age of 34, is the youngest-ever Finnish PM. Details of her personal life and lifestyle have often grabbed headlines.

In December 2021, Marin faced criticism after she was spotted at a nightclub after reports came out that a colleague of hers had tested positive for coronavirus. She later apologised for the lapse in judgement.

Earlier, Marin courted controversy when she posed in a blazer with no shirt underneath for a fashion magazine. A section of the population, in Finland and on social media, found her attire inappropriate. There were others who came out in support of her. Many women posted pictures dressed similarly.
