Dave Hebner, famed WWE referee and road agent, died from an undisclosed illness at his home in Mechanicsville, Virginia, on Friday. He was 73. 

Hebner’s nephew Brian Hebner shared the news of his uncle’s death on his Reffin’ It Up podcast. He then shared a post on social media, writing “RIP Dave Hebner. Gone but never forgotten. Always loved.”

Dave Hebner is the twin brother of Earl Hebner. Though his cause of death has not been revealed, reports suggest that he had been dealing with several health issues, including Parkinson’s Disease.

Hebner started his career as a referee with WWE in the 1980s. He was the referee for several important WWE matches including Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania 3 and Hogan vs. Savage at Wrestlemania 5. Following his retirement, he worked as a road agent for WWE until he was released from the company in 2005.

Hebner then worked in TNA for several years before joining the independent MMWA wrestling promotion where he served as manager for the Lumberjacks from 2012 until early this year.

Following his death, several of his colleagues and fans took to social media to pay tributes. 

“#RIP Dave Hebner – You & @TheEarlHebner were always so kind & supportive towards myself & Jeff. I have lots of love for the entire Hebner family. My thoughts go out to your family & friends. Godspeed, Dave,” wrestler Matt Hardy tweeted.

“RIP Dave Hebner. Being at the center of one of the biggest angles of all time, in front of 33 million on NBC, is a hell of an accomplishment for a referee,” another person tweeted.
