Following a public outcry over her partying in the previous week, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin apologised on Tuesday for a photo from a private party she hosted at her official residence in July.

A drug test done by the prime minister, one of the world’s youngest leaders, came back negative on Monday. It was done to allay fears when video footage of her singing and dancing with Finnish celebrities at another party surfaced last week.

Another photograph circulated on social media this week, showing two well-known female influencers kissing one other while covering their bare breasts with a “Finland” sign from the Prime Minister’s official residence in Helsinki.

“In my opinion, the picture is not appropriate. I apologise for it. That kind of a picture should not have been taken but otherwise, nothing extraordinary happened at the get-together,” Marin confirmed to reporters that the shot was taken at her home.

Marin, 36, who has made no secret of her love of leisure, said the photo was shot at a private party with her pals following a music festival in July.

“We had sauna, swam and spent time together,” she described the celebration at her seaside house.

Finns have been divided regarding the prime minister’s behaviour, with some praising her for balancing a private life with her high-profile job, while others have questioned whether her judgement would be damaged by her leisure pursuits.

Marin, who became the world’s youngest serving government leader in December 2019, agreed to take the drug test on Friday, saying she had never taken drugs and had not observed anyone doing so at the party she attended.

Marin told Reuters in January that she and her other young female ministers had received a lot of hate speech because of their gender and looks while in office.
