Canadian actor Ryan Grantham, who pled guilty to murdering his mother, planned to travel to Ottawa to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a court heard on Monday.

The 24-year-old starred in several films and television shows such as ‘Riverdale’, ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’.

On March 9, Grantham pled guilty to second-degree murder after the death of his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite. Waite’s autopsy report revealed that she died due to a single gunshot that hit her in the head.

“He put the crosshairs on the back of her head, closed his eyes and pulled the trigger,” Crown prosecutor Michaela Donnelly said, according to a report by CBC.

The court found that prior to the murder, Grantham had been experiencing feelings of hopelessness and self-loathing and had a strong urge to resort to violence of some kind. He was also worried about his mother finding out about his poor academic performance and his habit of smoking marijuana, according to Donnelly.

On March 31, 2020, the day of the murder, Grantham used a GoPro camera to film himself and the scene of the crime. The next day, he packed three guns, ammunition, camping supplies, 12 Molotov cocktails, and a printed map of the route of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.

After driving east for a while, Grantham reached Hope, British Columbia, and decided to go to the headquarters of Vancouver police to turn himself in.

“Mr. Grantham said, ‘I killed my mum,” Donnelly said.

The 24-year-old mentioned his plan to murder Trudeau in a police statement and his private journal. Both the pieces of evidence were presented in court and were used as sentencing submissions.
