Days after the assassination of Haiti’s president Jovenel Moise, the interim Prime Minister of the country, Claude Joseph, who has run the country after Moise’s killing, will be stepping down from his position on Tuesday. The new prime minister will be Ariel Henry, reported AFP quoting officials. 

The new government will not have a president, and will be tasked with organizing fresh elections “as soon as possible,” said the government official, who is close to the prime minister’s office.

Aeriel Henrey was the minister of interior and territorial communities since 2016. According to AFP, Henry had been tapped by Moise in the days before the president was shot dead in his home in Port-au-Prince in the early hours of July 7.

Joseph will return to his former post as foreign minister in the new government, which will be installed on Tuesday.

Moise had ruled Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, by decree after legislative elections due in 2018 were delayed in the wake of disputes, including on when his own term ended.

As well as presidential, legislative and local elections, Haiti had been due to have a constitutional referendum in September after it was twice postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic

The announcement comes days after Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated at his home by a commando on July 7.

A group of unidentified individuals attacked the private residence of Moise and opened fire. While Moise succumbed to injuries, the first lady was hospitalised. 

Later, after the investigations, the Caribbean country’s chief of police said that Jovel’s assassination was planned in the Dominican Republic. A photo had surfaced on social media where two of the suspects, who were both arrested later – meeting Haitian opposition senator John Joseph.

Haitian national police director Leon Charles said that the picture of the three was taken as they were planning the assassination of the former president in the Dominican Republic.

So far, five top officials of the country’s National Police have been arrested in conjunction with President Jovenel Mose’s assassination last week.
