A 7.6-magnitude preliminary earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao Island, Philippines, on December 2. With promptitude, a tsunami warning was issued. At 10:37 p.m., an earthquake with a moderate depth of 32 kilometers (20 miles) was recorded.
Based on the size and position of the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center highlighted concerns about possible tsunami waves affecting Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau, and the Philippines.

With the earthquake’s location and magnitude in mind, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it expected tsunami waves to hit parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the southern Philippines.
An initial magnitude of 7.6 was reported by the USGS, however, a value of 6.9 was reported by the Philippine organization in charge of earthquakes.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology advised those living along the coast in the provinces of Davao Oriental and southern Surigao del Sur to leave right away and seek higher ground. Teresito Bacolcol said that a 3.2-foot tsunami might happen, but that the wave might be larger in coves and bays due to the magnitude of the earthquake.
The Philippines is situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area recognized for its seismic activity, making it vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
