Olena Zelenska, the first lady of Ukraine, has been at the forefront of Ukrainian diplomacy ever since Russia launched an attack against Kyiv in February this year. While Ukrainian President and Zelenska’s husband Volodymyr Zelensky has not left Ukraine since February, the first lady has been going around the world with the aim of “strengthening alliances.”

Olena Zelenska, 44, was most recently seen on Vogue magazine’s cover page and Instagram handle, posing for the camera in a full-length gown under a navy coat. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also featured in the photo shoot, which was headed by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.

Zelenska and the couple’s two children went into hiding away from Zelensky for security reasons over the first two months of the war. After returning, the first lady started travelling overseas, asking for assistance in fending off Russian forces.

The Ukrainian first lady has addressed Britain’s House of Commons and committees of the United Nations and European Union. She also visited Washington DC earlier this month and stood in the US Capitol and made the case for more American-made air defense systems to block Russian missiles.

Zelenska, speaking to an audience that included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, appeared in the same congressional auditorium where her husband drew standing ovations from lawmakers three weeks into Russia’s invasion. Volodymyr Zelensky delivered his address through video conferencing.

Zelenska, however, has said that this is not the life she had anticipated and has “no personal craving for the spotlight.” The year Zelensky was elected as Ukrainian President, Zelenska told Vogue, “I found for myself arguments in favor of publicity. One of them is the opportunity to draw people’s attention to important social issues.”

Zelenska worked as a scriptwriter for her husband, a comedian and actor before he won the presidency in 2019. They married in 2003.
