A huge fire raged in Beirut port on Thursday, sparking alarm among Lebanese still reeling from a deadly dockside explosion that disfigured the capital last month.

The fire broke out at a warehouse where oil and tires are placed in the port’s duty-free zone, the Lebanese Army said on Twitter.

“Operations have begun to extinguish the fire,” the Army said. Army helicopters were taking part in efforts to extinguish the fire.

There was no immediate information on what caused Thursday’s fire, that sent thick black columns of smoke rose into the sky.

Thursday’s incident took place more than a month after a major explosion at a port in the Lebanese capital left at least 190 dead and thousands injured.
