A suicide bomber struck the Shiite mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, during Friday’s prayers and the detonation killed 56, wounded 194, Associated Press reported.
A top police official commented that the suicide bomber had strapped a vest onto his body with five kilograms of explosives. CCTV footage viewed by AP showed the bomber covering the explosive device underneath a black shawl. He was seen moving quickly towards the mosque’s entrance, firing at the police guarding the gates, before making his way inside.
Since the crude device was filled with ball bearings, the result of the blast and the death toll was much higher, said Moazzam Jah Ansari, a policeman from the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province of Peshawar.
