New York City is preparing to honour slain police officer Jason Rivera, who is being hailed as an inspiration among the immigrant community. Rivera, 22, and Officer Wilbert Mora were shot on Friday while responding to a call about an argument between an elderly woman and her adult son.
Officer Mora, 27, had suffered a serious head injury and is “fighting for his life”, police said. Funeral services were being finalised for Rivera, as his comrades mourned the loss of a rookie officer who joined the force to make a difference in a “chaotic city”. A coloumn of police officers, along with firefighters, lined the streets as a hearse carrying Rivera’s body left the medical examiner’s office.
