Legendary Black actor Sidney Poitier died on Friday the age of 94. He was the first Black actor in Hollywood to hit stardom, and broke the glass ceiling for Black actors by becoming the first Black man to bag an Academy Award nomination and an Academy Award win. Poitier was awarded the Oscar for his performance in ‘Lilies of the Field’ (1963), and went on to win several awards and honours in his career, including a honourary knighthood and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the US.
