International Youth Day is observed on August 12 every year. This day honors the vital role that young people play in bringing about the change necessary to address global concerns and promote sustainable development. It also helps recognize young talents who work relentlessly for society.

International Youth Day emphasizes the rights of young people to have access to proper education, employment, healthcare, monetary services and participation in public life. This day is also meant to encourage young people across the world to face issues of physical and mental health, education and employment.

The idea of International Youth Day was first proposed in 1991 by young people who had gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the World Youth Forum of the United Nations. Soon, the United Nations started to empower young people by recognizing emerging leaders and equipping them to address global concerns. The UN General Assembly approved the creation of International Youth Day on December 17, 1999, following a recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. The first International Youth Day was celebrated on August 12 in 2000.

This year, the theme for International Youth Day is Intergenerational solidarity: Creating a world for all ages. The theme suggests the idea of Sustainable Development Goals and raises awareness of barriers to intergenerational solidarity and ageism that affects society as a whole.

This day also honors the men and women who play an important role in spreading awareness about the major difficulties and issues that the young generation face throughout the world.
