Uncapped Avesh Khan picked four wickets, giving away 24 runs in his four-over spell, to guide the Lucknow Super Giants to a 12-run win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Monday.
Asked to bat first, skipper KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda struck useful half-centuries to lift the side to 169 for seven after losing three wickets for just 27 runs in the powerplay. While Washington Sundar dismissed Quinton de Kock and Evin Lewis both for 1, Manish Pandey was out for 11 runs.
Chasing 170, SRH lost openers Abhishek Sharma (13) and Kane Williamson (16) early before Rahul Tripathi's 44-run knock rescued the team. He eventually fell off Krunal Pandya’s bowling and was out caught in the deep in the 14th over. Hyderabad kept losing wickets at regular intervals before eventually losing the game.
Avesh Khan was adjudged Player of the Match. He dismissed Nicholas Pooran and Abdul Samad on back-to-back balls during the 17th over that changed the game in LSG's favour.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, KL Rahul praised the bowlers and spoke about losing early wickets.
"Not ideal to lose three wickets in the first four overs, it's not something that'll bring us down. that's something we need to learn as a batting group how we can play risk-free cricket. With the ball, we have been brilliant in all three games and that's something we need to carry ahead," he said.
Brief scores: LSG 169 for 7 in 20 overs (KL Rahul 68 off 50 balls, Deepak Hooda 51 off 33 balls, Washington Sundar 2/28, Romario Shepherd 2/42)
SRH 157/9 (Rahul Tripathi 44 off 30 balls, Avesh Khan Khan 4/24, Jason Holder 3/34).
