Iran on Sunday announced its intention to
accommodate the Afghan refugees fleeing Taliban in its three provinces
bordering the country whereas Albania has accepted a US request to temporarily
take in Afghan refugees seeking visas to enter the United States as Taliban
takes over the country.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama revealed that
US President Joe Biden‘s administration had recently requested his country to
consider serving as a transit country for a number of Afghan refugees whose
final destination is the United States.
“We will not say ‘No’, not just because
our great allies ask us to, but because we are Albania,” Rama said through
his social media, Reuters reported.
According to a Reuters report, the Biden
administration had held discussions with such countries as Kosovo and Albania
about protecting US-affiliated Afghans from Taliban reprisals until they
complete the process of approval of their US visas.
On the other hand, Iran says it wants to house
the Afghan refugees temporarily till the situation improves.
“Camps have been built in border areas in
three provinces. We expect those Afghan refugees to return home when the
situation improves in Afghanistan,” Interior Ministry official Hossein
Qasemi told Iran’s state news agency IRNA.
Two decades after being forced into hiding by
the US invasion of Afghanistan, the Taliban on Sunday seized back power after a
swift offensive against Afghan security forces and takeover of the country’s
major provinces in a span of few weeks.
Taliban entered Kabul on Sunday after taking
over prominent cities such as Khost, Kandahar and Herat. The group, led by
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, held talks with members of the civilian government
at the Afghan Presidential Palace, following which President Ashraf Ghani reportedly
stepped down from his post.
