Clarence Thomas, a sitting Supreme Court Justice in the United States, was admitted to the hospital on Friday in Washington, the court said in a statement. Justice Thomas, 73, was diagnosed with an infection and had been experiencing “flu-like symptoms”.

The Supreme Court did not clear the reason for not disclosing the information to the public for nearly two days. It also provided no additional details about the infection.

He is being treated with intravenous antibiotic medicine after undergoing tests at the hospital. The Supreme Court statement said that Justice Clarence Thomas was “resting comfortably.”

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is expected to be released from the hospital in a day or two as the judicial body is set to be in session on Monday to hear arguments in four cases. Thomas plans to participate in the cases even if he misses the arguments, the court said.

All nine justices in the United States Supreme Court have been fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, according to reports from Reuters.

Clarence Thomas, who was appointed by former United States President George H.W. Bush, is currently the longest-serving justice in the country’s top court. Justice Thomas identifies as a conservative and is also one of the two Black men to have served on the bench. He was appointed to the crucial position in 1991 after liberal justice Thurgood Marshall vacated the seat.

The Supreme Court, which has a total of nine justices,  is currently dominated by a 6-3 majority of the conservatives. 

Meanwhile, Ketanji Brown Jackson is set to take over as the first-ever Black woman to serve as a justice in the Supreme Court. Jackson, who was nominated by President Joe Biden, will be replacing veteran Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.
