Italian football giants Juventus sacked coach Maurizio Sarri on Saturday after the Serie A giants crashed out of the Champions League in the round of 16. Juventus was knocked out of the tournament in spite of winning 2-1 against Olympique Lyonnais on Friday. The Italia Serie A winners conceded an all-important away goal on the night and the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace, the club from Turin could not make it past the round of 16, and failed yet again in their bid to win the Champions League, a title they last lifted in 1996.

The nine-time reigning Serie A champion released a statement on Saturday saying that “Maurizio Sarri has been relieved of his post as coach of the first team.”

The club also tweeted from it’s official Twitter handle stating “Maurizio Sarri relieved of his duties.”

Sarri replaced former coach Massimiliano Allegri when he joined the club in 2019 after leading English giants Chelsea to a successful Europa Cup win.

2020 Series A winner Juventus in a statement said: “The club would like to thank the coach for having written a new page in Juventus’ history with the victory of the ninth-consecutive championship, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all the divisions of Italian football.”

Despite leading the ‘Old Lady’ to a ninth straight Scudetto, Sarri lost his job as the team exited Europe’s premier competition.

Besides crashing out of the Champions League, Juventus also lost in the Italian Cup and the Italian Super Cup finals this season.
