KBC Offline Quiz (November 26, 2021): Any lost or abandoned fishing gear that continues to trap and kill marine life is known as?

Trolling

Fly-fishing

Ghost-fishing

Spinning

Answer: Ghost-fishing

Ghost
fishing refers to the practice of abandoning or losing fishing gears in water
bodies that eventually trap fish and other marine animals. These gears entrap
fish and that often die and are then scavenged by other marine animals, who
also get entrapped in the same net. Fishing nets and traps are common ghost
fishing gears.

Causes of ghost
fishing include strong storms and winds that throw the fishing gear overboard, as
well as fisherman purposely throwing it overboard, as it seems the easiest way
of disposal.

Because of
those, thousands of tonnes of lost fishing gear continue to endanger species
that live underneath.

Not only
does ghost fishing kill marine life, it also cuts down the commercial stock of
fish that are collected. Fish trapped in ghost fishing gears are unsuitable to be
sold and used for consumption. Moreover, remains of their decaying bodies can
affect the overall health of other species in proximity. Ghost fishing gears are
hazardous to propellers of ships and submarines as well. They can get caught
and damage the propulsion systems.

Discarded gears
like nets, ropes and lines make up for about 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage
Patch.

Various organizations
like WWF have been working to eradicate ghost fishing, one of the deadliest
dangers to marine life.
