After prevailing over Rishi Sunak in the fiercely contested Conservative leadership race, Liz Truss will take office as Britain’s next prime minister.

The foreign secretary succeeds Boris Johnson, who was sacked by his own MPs earlier this summer. The foreign secretary received 81,326 votes (57.4%) from Conservative members, compared to the former chancellor’s 60,399 (42.6%).

But as the country is engulfed in a cost of living crisis that will leave families struggling to pay their energy bills this winter, the victory’s euphoria will soon give way to the harsh reality of the economic challenges that lie ahead.

More opposition parties responded to the information that Liz Truss would be the next prime minister.

Her leadership will bring similar “crisis and chaos,” according to Lib Dem leader Ed Davey, as Boris Johnson’s time in No. 10.

According to his tweet, “Under Liz Truss, we’re set to see more of the same crisis and chaos as under Boris Johnson.”

“From the cost of living emergency to the NHS crisis, the Conservatives have shown they don’t care, and have no plan. It’s time to scrap the energy price hike then call a General Election.”

Sir Keir Starmer, the head of the Labour Party, who will likely be Truss’s next opponent, has congratulated her.

But immediately after, he adds, “But after 12 years of the Tories all we have to show for it is low wages, high prices, and a Tory cost of living crisis.” the pleasant thoughts come to an end.

“Only Labour can deliver the fresh start our country needs,” continues Starmer.

He tweeted, “There is no more time to waste – action is needed now.”
