In the Liz Truss vs. Lettuce debate, the leafy
vegetable lettuce has finally emerged as the winner.

On Friday, October 13, the British tabloid
Daily Star pitted the 37-year-old Prime Minister against an iceberg lettuce to
see which one has a greater lifespan – the iceberg lettuce head or Truss’s job
as a PM

The tabloid set up a YouTube live stream showing an unrefrigerated
lettuce next to a picture of Truss, who at that time was struggling to keep her
position. The caption read, ‘Can Liz Truss outlast a lettuce’. The event even
gave the lettuce a personality by adding googly eyes and a blonde wig to mimic
Truss’s hair.

The comparison came after the Economist
magazine published a column titled ‘The Iceberg Lady’, a parody of the name The
Iron Lady, as Truss’ political idol Margaret Thatcher was called. The column
described Truss as having the ‘shelf-life of a lettuce’.

On Friday, October 20, seven days after the
beginning of the event, Liz Truss announced her resignation as Prime Minister,
providing an unlikely, but a celebratory victory for the lettuce. After her
announcement, the live stream attracted more than 20,000 viewers.

When the
Conservative leader announced her departure from her position, the lettuce on
the live stream was crowned with a plastic gold crown, with the screen text
reading – This Lettuce outlasted Liz Truss. The lettuce, with the picture of
Truss, flipped face-down, was seen celebrating with a glass of champagne as the
national anthem played behind it to mark its triumph.

Social media got flooded with users
congratulating the lettuce, with comments that read, “Lettuce for PM”, “Lettuce
Rejoice”, “Lettuce 1 Truss 0” and many more. The live stream which is still
continuing as of now, shows the iceberg lettuce thanking the audience for their
support.
