Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan is one of the most expensive cities in the world for overseas workers followed by Hong Kong and Beirut in 2021, according to the Cost of Living survey by Mercer.com.

Due to the financial crises and shortage of food, there is a rise in the cost of living, so Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan is the most expensive city in 2021.

Last year, Hong Kong topped the list of the most expensive cities but this year it came down to number two.

The most drastic change in the list was Beirut, which is placed at number three in the most expensive city. Last year, it was at number 45. As per the Mercer survey, various factors led to this drastic change like the COVID-19 pandemic, Beirut explosion in 2020, and financial crises.

Most of the cities on the list are in Asia, including Tokyo and Shanghai. Geneva and Beijing have moved one step up from their last year’s ranking, as per Mercer’s survey.

Bern is placed at the bottom of the top 10 most expensive cities in 2021.
